Recipe for the Real Caribbean Rum Punch

Wednesday Jun 29, 2011

As soon as I write the “real” rum punch, I can hear the protests of “who says so?” ringing through the chain of Caribbean islands.  But Captain Gordon Monsen of the sailing charter yacht Liberte has been feeding me bits of Caribbean history for years now, and if  he says it’s authentic, I’m  on board. He tells me,  “This delicious concoction is the traditional rum punch recipe used in the West Indies, passed down for years. The old rhyme goes, ‘One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak.’ ” Of course, I had to taste test his recipe to be sure.  I used my own favorite Caribbean rum, Cruzan Aged Rum, which can still be bought here in the States for Read more…

5 Best New England Yacht Charter Specials

Monday Jun 27, 2011 New England Yacht Charter - Fshing Seaport

One of our favorite summer yacht charter destinations is southern New England.  The ports are abundant with seafaring spirit, unique and enriching tourist attractions, and exquisite coastal beauty.  Newport, RI, reputedly the sailing capital of the U.S. is an idyllic place to start your yacht vacation.  It’s only a half hour from the Providence, RI airport or 90 minutes from Boston. From Newport, it’s a leisurely sail to Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.  Quaint fishing villages, historic seaports,  lobsters,  strawberry festivals, lighthouses, and Yankee charm will fill your long, lazy days. On a private yacht charter, you can be in the heart of the attractions in the morning and anchored off a deserted beach in the late afternoon, perhaps “gunk Read more…

Leaders in Eco-Friendly Vacations in the Yacht Charter Industry

Monday Jun 27, 2011

Ocean Getaways has been a  key player in the international yacht charter industry since the early 1980s.  This year, Trish Cronan, President, was elected  as Vice President of the  Charter Yacht Brokers Association International (CYBA).  Her primary role in the organization is to head up its efforts to create eco-friendly yacht vacations, and she’s created a team of colleagues to work together to set up guidelines for yachts and yacht charter guests. “As an organization, CYBA is committed to preserving the natural beauty and environmental health of the oceans and lands where we sail,” says Trish.  “We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of the global yacht charter industry, including the impact of yachts, brokers, and central agents.”  For more details on their first green initiative, Read more…

Incentive Travel Company Owners Sails Around the World

Thursday Jun 23, 2011

I know a lot of people who have sailed around the world.  Not to be ho-hum about it, but it’s the nature of being in the  yacht charter business and knowing so many captains and crews.  None of them, however, has entertained me as wittingly as my old (not in years, but duration) business colleague, Larry Jacobson.  He was not a “usual suspect” for a circumnavigation, at least for me.  I met him on “the other side” of my business… the incentive travel industry. Since the early 80s, Ocean Getaways has offered incentive programs on charter yachts, and back then, before we had established a long track record of extraordinary programs, it took a leap of faith for a company to choose to send their Read more…

Super Yacht Charter in Mediterranean – 26 guests- Yacht Charter Special

Monday Jun 20, 2011 Super Yacht Charter on Sherakhan in Mediterranean

Very few luxury charter yachts can take over 12 guests due to international yacht charter regulations.  Sherakhan, one of our favorite super yachts for charter, is one of the few exceptions to the rule and can take up to 26 guests in 13 cabins. This magnificent charter yacht is currently available from August 10 on  in Naples, Italy and is  offering an exceptional Mediterranean yacht charter special of  €350,000 for 7 days or €600,000 plus expenses for 14 days.  That’s a savings of  €190,000 for 14 days! The international crew of 18 has many successful yacht charters under their keel including  corporate yacht charters, yacht charters with celebrities,  family yacht charters, and expedition yacht charters to far flung areas of the Read more…

Going Green Yacht Charters

Friday Jun 17, 2011 BVI Charter Yacht Show Eco Friendly

At the 2010 BVI Charter Yacht Show, a few of my charter broker buddies and I decided to ask all of the yacht charter crews what they were doing to make a vacation on their charter yacht more eco-friendly.  We were forming a Going Green committee in CYBA – the Charter Yacht Brokers Association International, and we wanted to see what was already being done so that we could create our environmental goals for the year. What was present in the majority of the conversations was a deep passion for preserving the beauty of the ocean.  It’s not just our livelihood, but something that nurtures us, intrigues us, humbles us.  Beyond that, I was so impressed by the myriad of efforts that were already underway Read more…

Going Green on Luxury Charter Yachts

Thursday Jun 16, 2011 Bottled Water on Luxury Yacht Charters

Going Green on luxury charter yachts has been on my mind a lot lately.  As Chairperson of CYBA’s (Charter Yacht Brokers Association International) Going Green committee, we have taken on the initiative to reduce plastic water bottle use aboard charter yachts worldwide.  It’s sort of like the “Drink Tap Water” movement on land. The majority of worldwide luxury charter yachts, both power and sail, produce their own water by desalinating ocean water.  Most can take it a step further to filter it, test it, chill it, and serve it in re-usable stainless steel water bottles. Why Is This So Important? We sail in some of the most pristine waters of the world and visit islands that often do not have the infrastructure or the economic Read more…

Celebrate 4th of July on a Bahamas Mega Yacht Charter

Tuesday Jun 14, 2011 Bahamas Mega Yacht Charter

Celebrate your independence with a mega yacht charter in south Florida or the Bahamas on the 130-foot Westport, Mary Alice II. The yacht’s layout is ideally suited for five adult couples as it has five king cabins – a rare feature on a mega yacht. Of course, if you have singles in your group, two of the cabins can convert to twins. I was aboard the yacht for a James Bond theme cocktail party in May and just loved the crew – playful, engaging, professional – all those things that a charter guest wants on a luxury yacht charter. And talk about independence – there’s plenty of toys for each couple to head out and do their own thing – wave runners, underwater scooters, kayaks, Read more…
