As soon as I write the “real” rum punch, I can hear the protests of “who says so?” ringing through the chain of Caribbean islands. But Captain Gordon Monsen of the sailing charter yacht Liberte has been feeding me bits of Caribbean history for years now, and if he says it’s authentic, I’m on board. He tells me, “This delicious concoction is the traditional rum punch recipe used in the West Indies, passed down for years. I know a lot of people who have sailed around the world. Not to be ho-hum about it, but it’s the nature of being in the yacht charter business and knowing so many captains and crews. None of them, however, has entertained me as wittingly as my old (not in years, but duration) business colleague, Larry Jacobson. He was not a “usual suspect” for a circumnavigation, at least for me. At the 2010 BVI Charter Yacht Show, a few of my charter broker buddies and I decided to ask all of the yacht charter crews what they were doing to make a vacation on their charter yacht more eco-friendly. We were forming a Going Green committee in CYBA – the Charter Yacht Brokers Association International, and we wanted to see what was already being done so that we could create our environmental goals for the year. What was present in the majority of the conversations was a deep passion for preserving the beauty of the ocean. Going Green on luxury charter yachts has been on my mind a lot lately. As Chairperson of CYBA’s (Charter Yacht Brokers Association International) Going Green committee, we have taken on the initiative to reduce plastic water bottle use aboard charter yachts worldwide. It’s sort of like the “Drink Tap Water” movement on land. The majority of worldwide luxury charter yachts, both power and sail, produce their own water by desalinating ocean water.
