What’s the Weather Like on a BVI Yacht Charter in the Summer?

Tuesday Jun 26, 2012

BVI Yacht Charter - Summer WeatherSummer is the perfect time for a BVI yacht charter vacation.  Both air and water temperatures only vary about five degrees between winter and summer, and the summer temperatures are pleasant.  The year round tradewinds coming off the coast of Africa keep the humidity down.  The water is perfect for hours of snorkeling or scuba diving.  I especially love it that you do not have to wear a wetsuit when scuba diving.

I’ve lived in both Florida and Texas in the summer and compared to the swelter of 95 degree days in those states, the Caribbean feels downright balmy.  The anchorages are less busy, the cruise ships have headed to the Mediterranean, and life just unfolds at a lollygag pace.

Are special yacht charter discounts available in the summer?  Absolutely.  Many charter yachts will discount their rates by 10-15%.  Others offer some enticing summer specials such as kids sail for free, 8 days for the price of 7, or added extras like free scuba or spa treatments.  Check our blog for ongoing Caribbean Yacht Charter Specials.

What about hurricanes?
Officially, hurricane season is from June 1st to November 30th.  In a typical year, the highest hurricane activity in the Caribbean occurs from late August to early October.  Of course, there are exceptions, but given the historical odds, we feel comfortable in booking Caribbean charters through early August and then starting up again at the end of October.  November is one of our favorite months in the Caribbean.  The yachts have just completed their annual maintenance; the crews are fresh from vacations; and the weather is stunning.

Do some locations get less tropical storm or hurricane activity?
Many yachts re-locate to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the summer months as storms often develop in more northern latitudes.  The Grenadines are idyllic in the summer. The winds and  seas are less robust than in the winter months, making it an ideal time to charter here.

Tips for Booking a BVI Yacht Charter in the Summer

  • Book a yacht with air-conditioning and make sure the crew will run it overnight; the breeze is less in the summer so natural ventilation may not always keep you cool
  • Purchase trip cancellation insurance… just in case an unexpected storm heads your way
