Now this new BVI catamaran charter yacht is right up my alley. I’ve been touting charter yachts going green for a few years now, and this “just launched” 54′ Nautitech charter catamaran combines luxurious accommodations, high performance sailing, and leading edge green technology for the smallest carbon footprint possible. The name says it all – Greenboat I. I hope that the “I” means that there are more green catamaran charters coming our way. The Galapagos Islands are near and dear to my heart. I had the privilege of escaping on a week long luxury yacht charter in the Galapagos about a decade ago, and the wonder of the wildlife on these islands still moves me deeply. Snorkeling with sea lions and penguins, diving with hammerheads, giggling with the swimming lizards, watching the giant land tortoises slow motion mating rituals. Viewing birds and sea creatures that only exist in this one place on earth. No wonder Darwin was so enamored of this magical place. Going Green grass roots efforts are well underway in the British Virgin Islands. Like many Caribbean islands, the BVI faces many environmental challenges with one of the largest issues being trash and no means of recycling. The environmental adage of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is by necessity shortened to “Reduce and ReUse”. The yacht charter industry through the efforts of the Charter Yacht Society of the BVI (CYS) and Charter Yacht Brokers’ Association International (CYBA) have tackled the problem by reducing plastic water bottle usage, purchasing earth friendly paper products, using eco-friendly products, and buying local when possible. At the 2010 BVI Charter Yacht Show, a few of my charter broker buddies and I decided to ask all of the yacht charter crews what they were doing to make a vacation on their charter yacht more eco-friendly. We were forming a Going Green committee in CYBA – the Charter Yacht Brokers Association International, and we wanted to see what was already being done so that we could create our environmental goals for the year. Going Green on luxury charter yachts has been on my mind a lot lately. As Chairperson of CYBA’s (Charter Yacht Brokers Association International) Going Green committee, we have taken on the initiative to reduce plastic water bottle use aboard charter yachts worldwide. It’s sort of like the “Drink Tap Water” movement on land. The majority of worldwide luxury charter yachts, both power and sail, produce their own water by desalinating ocean water.
