What’s the Weather Like on a BVI Yacht Charter in the Summer?

Tuesday Jun 26, 2012 BVI Yacht Charter - Summer Weather

Summer is the perfect time for a BVI yacht charter vacation.  Both air and water temperatures only vary about five degrees between winter and summer, and the summer temperatures are pleasant.  The year round tradewinds coming off the coast of Africa keep the humidity down.  The water is perfect for hours of snorkeling or scuba diving.  I especially love it that you do not have to wear a wetsuit when scuba diving. I’ve lived in both Florida and Texas in the summer and compared to the swelter of 95 degree days in those states, the Caribbean feels downright balmy.  The anchorages are less busy, the cruise ships have headed to the Mediterranean, and life just unfolds at a lollygag pace. Are special yacht charter discounts Read more…

Should the Youngest Sailor to Circumnavigate the World be Recognized?

Wednesday Feb 1, 2012

Is 14 too young to set sail around the world by yourself? Laura Dekker, now age 15,  just became the youngest person to sail solo around the world.  She and her 38′ sailboat, “Guppy” arrived in the Caribbean island of Saint Maarten.  27,000 miles and 366 days. Charter yacht captain, Rick of the charter sailing yacht, Sophisticated Lady, was there to witness the fanfare. ” A large part of the island and sailing community were on hand to deliver a heartfelt welcome to Laura as she returned through a special opening of the Simpson Bay Bridge, accompanied by Coast Guard escorts.  Arriving one year and one day after the date she departed on her voyage, she ended her journey at the exact same place she Read more…

Bahamas Still Need Relief from Hurricane Irene

Thursday Sep 8, 2011 Hurrican Irene Bahamas

Although we do not hear much about it in the news, the Out-Islands of the Bahamas, especially Cat Island and Long Island, took the brunt of Hurricane Irene.  Read a recent report from the island of Eleuthera. These islands do not have the infrastructure to withstand such powerful winds nor the funds to make the repairs.  Some islands are still without electricity. The Bahamas Relief Fund has been making a huge contribution by flying in generators that will run everything from chest freezers to power tools.  They have  also brought in  roofing tarps, hammers, building materials, first aid supplies, and water containers.       It’s time to give back to the people of the islands who give us so much when we travel there Read more…

BVI Artist Proposes Underwater Sculpture Park

Tuesday Jul 26, 2011

Aragorn Dick-Read is a familiar face in Trellis Bay, Tortola where he displays his works of art at his beachside studio and gallery – everything from silk screened t-shirts to pottery to metal sculptures.  Recently, he proposed the idea of an underwater sculpture park to the BVI Scuba Organization. Aragorn suggests that these works of art could reflect the cultural heritage of the BVI (British Virgin Islands) and be viewed by both snorkelers and scuba divers.  Additionally, the art will serve as man made reefs and offer some environmental benefits such as attracting new coral growth, creating new fish habitats, and offering some relief for the well-visited current dive sites. You can view a few sketches of possible scenes on his website.  My personal favorite Read more…

What Is A Mocko Jumbie?

Wednesday Jul 13, 2011 Mocko Jumbie - Yacht Charter Party - Virgin Gorda

Mocko Jumbies are Caribbean stilt dancers dressed in sheeny colorful garb with satins, sequins, and often a carnival mask.   Once dancers at religious affairs in West Africa, the West Indian version of the dance is more party than spiritual with gravity defying kicks and bends to Calypso sounds, bells, drums, and whistles.  Try dancing with one that is perched on 10 to 15 foot stilts, and your eyes may come up to its knees. Now take away the “mocko”, and a jumbie is a West Indian term for ghost or spirit.  So their original purpose in life was to scare away the evil spirits.  Today, they light up the crowds and get everyone feeling “hot, hot, hot”. Although you can find them throughout the Caribbean Read more…
