The America’s Cup – A Legend in the Making
Renowned as the world’s oldest sporting trophy, the America’s Cup is a battle of the sails that have been taking place sporadically for over a century and a half. The 10-day race culminates in a thrilling battle of the sails between the defender of the Cup and the ultimate challenger after all others have been eliminated. Curiously enough, the America’s Cup does not follow a predetermined scheduled and is only held when a yacht (winner of an exciting selection series) formally challenges the Cup’s holder.
The America’s Cup was named after the 19th-century schooner America, the winner of the first ever competition held in England in 1851. America hailed from the New York Yacht Club and sailed over the Atlantic to be delivered to her new owners who intended to enter her in local sailing races. When asked about her speed, master shipwright George Steers famously stated that ‘If she doesn’t win, you don’t have to pay for her!’ America won, the buyer paid, and the rest…as they say…is yacht racing’s legendary history.
The New York Yacht Club held the Cup for an astonishing 132 consecutive years, the longest running winning streak in any sport in history. Challenged and beaten by Australia II in 1983, the New York Yacht Club failed to ever win back the trophy. In 2017, it will be the turn of the Golden Gate Yacht Club to defend the jeweled crown. In the sailing world, there really is no bigger deal than the America’s Cup and partaking in any way, shape or form – as a competitor or spectator – is the dream of all yachting aficionados.
