With miles of pristine beaches in the BVI, it's a challenge to anoint a single one with the Best Beach in the BVI title. So we've begged the issue by giving each of our top ten best beaches in the BVI their own special designation. White Bay, Jost Van Dyke easily earns the title of the "best beach in the BVI for beach bars" . In fact, it may be the best "beach bar" beach in the Caribbean.
Imagine a long powder white sand beach fringed with palms divided in the middle by an outcropping of rocks and a barrier coral reef which on most days sends gentle waves to lap the shores. There's only one way to get here and that's by boat... either on a private yacht charter, a daysail boat from St. Thomas or a ferry to Great Harbor, Jost van Dyke and then a taxi or a heart-pumping walk to White Bay.
The Soggy Dollar Bar reigns supreme in popularity. Aptly named as your greenbacks get wet as you swim ashore it claims to be the inventor of the infamous "painkiller" a powerful rum libation made with amber rum juices, coconut and a zest of nutmeg. The debate about who first concocted the painkiller is as passionate as the claim to where Jimmy Buffet wrote Cheeseburgers in Paradise. (Better not tell them we said that!) Have a go at their "Ring Game" - the simplest ,but hardest "Get the Ring on the Hook" game with practice now available on an iPhone App.
A few yards to the west is one of our favorites - Gertrude's Beach Bar - with the queen flirt of Jost Van Dyke - our friend Gertrude whose smile could melt the polar vortex and whose chicken roti is divine. Farther along is One Love Bar and Grill and Coco Loco. Hendo’s Hideout, the newest watering hole is nestled in the palms right next door to Soggy. With its thatched roofed, open-air restaurant, commanding wrap-around central bar built, and hand hewed dark Nicaraguan wood, it exudes a relaxed, yet trendy vibe. Those lounge chairs are just beckoning you to come and Lime - the West Indian word for doing absolutely nothing.
Ivan's Stress-Free Bar at the far eastern end of White Bay and is worth the trek. Enjoy the tire swing under the tamarind tree, marinate in the hammock or belly up to the bar for a Jost tale or two. Kenny Chesney filmed scenes here for his 2002 country music video recording No Shirt,No Shoes,No Problems That's a way of life on this tiny island of 225 people may be a dozen cars lots of goats and chickens and friendly faces.
Superhint from the Experts here at Ocean Getaways: This is a beach for daytime revelry. The day trippers leave by late afternoon and the party yachts cast off for Great Harbor to continue making merry at Foxy's at night. So if you want to savor the solitude and just enjoy the beauty of White Bay without rubbing a dozen other elbows, come for sunset. Anchor overnight, enjoy the hush of dawn and a solitary walk on the beach in the morning. Definitely the Best Beach in the BVI for anchoring 25 breaststrokes from the beach and swimming ashore.
A BVI Catamaran Charter is the best way to get you there.
