What is the Royal Bahamian Potcake?

Bahamas Potcake DogSo why are the roadside dogs of the Bahamas called potcakes? I assumed it had something to do with the fact that I'd see one lazing about in the streets, often curling up into a ball and laying in  one of the many pot holes.  So pot hole, pot cake.  Good enough explanation for me although my grandkids didn't get the connection. So we asked Uncle Google who said that "potcake" is a Bahamian term for a thick, mushy food that gets caked in the bottom of a pot of peas and rice after many reheatings.  These leftovers were then served to the stray dogs who used to roam the islands... who then became known as potcakes.  In the 70s, they were officially recognized as the Royal Bahamian Potcakes and in February of this year, they were accepted by the Bahamas Kennel Club.  Sort of a rags to royalty story. Many organizations like www.potcake.org and www.potcakeplace.com are dedicated to finding loving homes for them.  My favorite site is Amigo the Potcake with its lively cartoon and children's bookaimed at raising awareness with a "makes you wanna dance" Calypso beat.
