World Oceans Day 2016

Trish Cronan Presenting to the International Superyacht Society - How Many Plastic Water Bottles Does a Superyacht Use in a Week

What can you do to honor World Oceans Day?

Kiss a fish, hug a dolphin, clean a beach, say no to plastic or check out an event in your local area. And if you're already booked you can take a few moments to reflect on what our oceans mean to you.

Maybe they are the source of your livelihood as they are to me. Or perhaps your source of inspiration, relaxation, or exhilaration - they are all of those for us as well.

What small steps can you take in your everyday life to give back to the ocean to become its caretaker?

It could be as simple as not using plastic bags, saying no to plastic straws, buying sustainable fish, or using eco-friendly sunscreen.

One of the goal's of World Oceans Day is to get individuals to make a personal pledge to make a difference. Seven years ago, our President, Trish Cronan, formed the Going Green Committee for CYBA, Charter Yacht Brokers International, an association of charter yacht brokers that represents about 1,500 charter yachts sailing in our worldwide oceans. We launched a campaign to reduce plastic water bottle waste on yachts - this is especially critical in our exotic island locations that have no recycling.

According to a report issued by the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation, there could be more plastic (by weight) than fish in the planet's oceans by the year 2050. As we produce more and more plastic, only 5% of it ever makes it to a recycling facility and the equivalent of a garbage truck's worth of plastic is dumped into the sea every minute. So in honor of World Oceans Day, we pledge to continue and expand our plastic water bottle reduction efforts in 2018.

Stay tuned for our new initiative to raise awareness around the damaging effects of sunscreen on coral reefs and the need to use eco-friendly sunscreens If you are a charter yacht guest you can join in by agreeing to drink the yacht's "tap water" which is made and purified onboard. And if you have kids, here's some great ideas for having them think green at an early age.
